Consciousness
“The limits of my language are the limits of my world”
Ludwig Wittgenstein, Tractatus logigo-philosphicus, 1922.
In this work I make attempts at expanding the limits of my world using pictures.
Materialists have concluded that consciousness is a product of biological complexity formed through the meaningless process of evolution. Pantheists believe it is the very stuff of the universe and theists thank god.
My hunch is that consciousness is fundamental in the universe just like light or carbon. I can’t imagine where it has come from but I think god is a very unsatisfactory explanation. But if consciousness was created by god, and god did exist, she would almost certainly be nothing like how we imagine her to be. And even if we could prove either way the existence of god, both outcomes are equally astonishing and say nothing of an equally important question: Why is there consciousness?
Materialists reject the ‘why is there consciousness?’ question. That’s because to them the universe has no meaning, and we can’t ask what the point is to something that is pointless. I think it’s a fair question though and it seems to me the purpose of consciousness is to create meaning by asking why?
